POHVALI BIZNIS #22: Eco-friendly small businesses – Ski goggle covers

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, governmental and non-governmental organizations began to discuss the consequences of mass industrialization. One of these consequences is global warming or climate change. However, more on this topic began to be discussed in the second decade of the 21st century. Many industries around the world have changed their way of producing goods such as plastic, metal, paper, and have opted for an ecological way of production. This is certainly not enough because there are still industries whose methods of producing raw materials continue to damage the environment, but also accelerate the process of climate change. There is a lot of discussion in economic and technological circles about changing the way we produce raw materials that we use in everyday life.

Larry Fink, one of the founders of the largest investment management BlackRock, believes that the future of the planet, but also investment in technology are products that will have a “green” approach to production.

“I believe that the next 1,000 unicorns – a company with a market value of more than a billion dollars – will not be a search engine, they will not be a media company, they will be companies that develop green hydrogen, green agriculture, green steel and green cement,” Fink told CNBC.

The future of various industries, but also economic funds, is to invest in technology that will slow down the process of climate change. A positive story comes to us from Katarzyna Bromka, who is engaged in the production of covers for ski goggles in an environmentally friendly way.

Katarzyna was already involved in environmental volunteering, but she realized that was not enough when she watched a documentary about the amount of material that is not used and that itself becomes waste.

“I was literally shocked when I realized how many things people throw away. I have been buying my clothes in second-hand shops for many years, but I realized that it was not enough and I wanted to give a second life to these discarded fabrics, ”says Bromka.

The production of covers requires a certain amount of discarded material, and as Katarzyna tells us, the materials come from all sides.

“I only use leftover fabric to sew goggle covers. I’m always looking for a stretchy material, like elastane from swimsuits or leggings, so I can fit on any model of glasses. The fabrics come from various places such as second hand shops, factory scraps, my closet or a friend's closet.”

Goggle covers are not just an environmentally friendly product, but an eco-friendly product that protects the environment from the accumulation of waste created from damaged or broken glasses.

“Plus, my goggle covers are eco-friendly because they protect the glasses from scratches – so people can use them for longer, instead of buying a new pair every year,” says Katarzyna.

Although this is a small business with a limited production, this gives us a positive example of how each person can do something for the future of the planet. Katarzyna hopes to inspire people to be creative with the material they intend to discard for the purpose of preserving the environment.

The future of the planet depends on how we deal with the waste we produce, and how we can move from old methods to more modern, eco-friendly production methods.
